TYWARDREATH COMES OUT IN FORCE FOR POST OFFICE10.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 31st Jul 2008
Over 200 people packed into St Andrews Hall in Tywardreath last night [Wednesday] to show their support for the village post office which is threatened with closure. Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for St Austell & Newquay, addressed the meeting that was organised by the parish council. Stephen Gilbert said: "I know how important this post office is. I grew up in the area, went to school in Fowey and have family and friends who live here in the village. It is a testament to the sense of community in Tywardreath that so many people are here to show their support for the post office." Mr Gilbert added that he has written to the senior managers at the Post Office inviting them to come to Tywardreath. He said: "I want the individuals who will make this decision to come to Tywardreath to face the people who live here so they can see and hear for themselves why it is so important to keep this post office open." The Liberal Democrat candidate also announced that there would be a protest march from Tywardreath Post Office to the next nearest Post Office, in Par, leaving Tywardreath at 10.30am on Saturday 9th August. Stephen Gilbert added "We will be using every tool in the box to make sure that the post office listen to local people. They don't seem to understand the geography, the bad bus links, and the lack of parking at Par."
