PENHALLOW HOTEL FIRE: LIB DEMS PRAISE COMMUNITY RESPONSE

2.17.54pm GMT Sat 18th Aug 2007

Stephen Gilbert, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Newquay, has paid tribute to the response of the community to the fire at the Penhallow Hotel.

Stephen Gilbert said: "People in Newquay have rallied around to help those affected by this tragic fire and their response has done Cornwall proud."

"As well as commending the professionalism of the emergency services and the response from both the County and Restormel Council, it's important we recognise the sterling work of the WRVS, Newquay Lions Club and the owners and staff of the local pubs and hotels which opened their doors for those needing food and shelter."

Mr Gilbert was speaking after helping the WRVS to unload mattresses and sleeping bags at Newquay Sports Centre in order to prepare the centre to provide temporary shelter to people displaced by the fire.

He added: "My thoughts are with the families of the people affected by this fire."
