Nearly 200 residents of St Austell signed the Liberal Democrats' Green Tax Switch petition in just 3 hours in St Austell town centre on Saturday 21 October.

Many people who said that they were not Liberal Democrat supporters, nonetheless wanted to add their names to the petition because of their concerns about the lack of action on global warming and climate change. The petition asks for support for a change in taxation policy to reduce taxes on income whilst increasing taxes on environmentally polluting activities such as inefficient aircraft movements and large gas-guzzling cars.

Matthew Taylor, MP for Truro and St Austell, said, "The Liberal Democrats have always been seen as the party with the best policies for the environment. We were championing these issues long before Cameron's Tories started to think that they might be vote winning policies. We are the only party with a carefully costed package of measures that would actually start to do something about tackling what is the most important issue facing not just this country but all of mankind. We are grateful for the support of local people in St Austell for our policies."
